Hlekulani Maluleke is a business leader who bridges the worlds of digital creative media, ICT, and engineering. Having previously worked in various engineering roles in the mining and steel-making industries, and with several strategic investments in ICT businesses, his passion for storytelling, fuelled by a unique blend of technical expertise and artistic flair, has propelled him to the forefront of the South African creative industry.

Hleku is the co-founder and MD of Flashing Lites Studios, a leading South African digital creative agency renowned for bringing Africa’s ideas to life. Flashing Lites boasts a diverse client portfolio across the continent, from Zambia to Ethiopia and Kenya to Lesotho, and offers a comprehensive suite of services spanning strategy, creative, production, and digital solutions.
From Mechanical Engineer to Creative Pioneer:
Hleku’s journey began at the tender age of 15, when he picked up a Kodak point-and-shoot camera and discovered his passion for capturing stories through the lens. While his initial foray into the creative realm was met with entrepreneurial spirit (selling photos to classmates!), he later pursued a career in mechanical engineering, honing his skills in the demanding fields of mining, steel-making, and energy.
The Synergy of Engineering and Storytelling:
In 2015, Hleku’s yearning for creative expression led him to return to his first love. Combining his technical prowess with his innate understanding of narrative, he co-founded Flashing Lites Studios. Under his leadership, the agency has evolved into a powerhouse, attracting blue-chip clients like Exxaro Resources, Thungela Resources, Santam, Sanlam, AlexForbes, ABSA and Discovery to mention a few.
